How to Treat a Trans Woman?

A trans woman is a man who feels he is a woman. His body is male. That does not change with clothes, hormones, surgery, or how he feels.

Everyday talk

- You can call him by the name he prefers. Many people do this just to be polite.

- You can use “she” if you want, or stick with “he,” or just use his name. Neither choice is hate. It’s up to you.

When the body actually matters

Treat him as male in these situations:

- Sports and physical contests: Men are stronger and faster on average because of male puberty. Mixing sexes is unfair and can be unsafe.

- Bathrooms, changing rooms, prisons, shelters: These are separated by sex for safety and privacy. Male strength and male patterns of behavior do not disappear.

- Doctor visits: Doctors must treat the actual body (prostate, male bone structure, male drug responses, etc.).

Simple bottom line

Be polite in normal conversation if you choose.

When safety, fairness, or health is involved, treat him according to his male body.

You do not have to pretend a man is a woman.
